There are several search engines, offering to help the user in discovering what they are searching for, on IRC.

Generally, there are two parts in the search engine:-
First is the "back-end" or the "spider/crawler". Back end is the work horse of the search engine. It crawls up the IRC servers indexing the information sent across them. Channel text (text displayed on public channels publicly) is the information that is indexed. Method used for storage is sort of relational Databases, like MySQL or Oracle. Selection of the database depends on the programming language used in which the spider bot is written.

The second is the front-end "search engine". Front end is an interface between the user and the database. It basically helps the user to get what they want from the database, containing indexed information. We can also code these front end search engines in any programming language. Usually PHP, Perl, ASP and C are the languages used for front end search engines and indexing spiders. In most search engines, data is indexed itself and crawls IRC through their own spiders. Other indexers are "user based", which means that they totally depend on the users who need to install their "add-on" to their IRC client. The purpose of having the "add-on" installed is to send the channel information to the databases to get to know the channels on which the users were. IRC have contributed greatly to the popularity of IRC in recent years, by making the process of finding information on IRC completely automated, in the search engines.
